At Tampa City Dance Center, our instructors are highly experienced professionals dedicated to inspiring and guiding dancers of all levels. With backgrounds in ballet, contemporary, acro, and more, they bring a wealth of knowledge, passion, and artistry to every class.

Shelby Russ
CONTEMPORARY
Shelby Russ was born and raised in Tampa, FL where she danced from age 3 in a local studio. At 15, she attended the performing arts school Howard W. Blake High, where she trained in ballet, modern, choreography and had the opportunity to work with Jennifer Archibald, Jon Ole Olstad, Duncan Cooper, and Bliss Kohlmyer.

She then continued on to train at the University of South Florida and worked with Stephanie Martinez, Joshua Peugh, Michael Foley, Jeanne Travers, and Paula Nunez. Upon graduating with her Bachelor in Fine Arts, her self choreographed solo "Woman's Search" was selected for the American College Dance Association national gala in Long Beach, CA and than was further selected (1 of 5) to perform at the 2023 Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival.
She joined the Tampa City Ballet Company in the 2023-2024 season.

Luana Hidalgo
POINTE FOR BEGINNERS
Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, Luana Hidalgo started studying dance at the Institute of Art at an early age and graduated from Madame Irene Levandoski's Ballet School. She became a soloist with Ballet of Maracaibo before she became a principal dancer for Ballet Nuevo Mundo de Caracas.

Hidalgo had the honor of learning from some of the world’s best choreographers: Vicente Nebrada, Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Margot Sappington, Hans van Manen, John Butler and Ulysses Dove, among others. Ulysses Dove created a work especially for Hidalgo called “Urban Songs of the Moon”. In 1995 she was awarded “Best Classical Dancer - Casa del Artista” in Venezuela. In 2001, Hidalgo received the honor of the “City of Avignon” in France.
She joined the Cleveland Ballet in 2001 and performed principal roles in ballets choreographed by Michael Smuin, Flemming Flindt, Dennis Nahat, Ian Horvath and Donald McKayle. Hidalgo has performed classical repertoire from Petipa to Fokine and Balanchine, as well as, modern works.
When she retired as a dancer, she became a dance teacher for the Cleveland San Jose Ballet School, The Nevada Ballet Theatre and Ballet San Jose. She also taught for thirteen years alongside the faculty of the Vladimir Issaev School of Classical Ballet and as a Ballet Mistress for their ballet company, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.
After years of teaching for various prestigious schools, she has moved to Tampa to challenge herself as she works with America’s Ballet School’s artistic director, Paula Nuñez. She has joined Nuñez in a new project called “On Your Feet” and as a ballet mistress of Tampa City Ballet. Hidalgo is excited to bring this unique project to life. She was drawn to this brand-new experience where, through the art of dance, she is able to bring life-changing opportunities to today’s youth.

Maddison Pineda Bender
OPEN CONTEMPORARY
Madison Pineda began her early dance training in Sacramento, CA, and Keller, TX. At age 16, she moved to New York City to attend The Joffrey Ballet School Jazz and Contemporary Program. She is looking forward to creating and performing with Tampa City Ballet this season.

In 2021, Madison graduated from The Juilliard School with a B.F.A. in Dance and received the Martha Hill Award and the Juilliard Career Advancement Fellowship Grant. She also trained at the Jacob's Pillow Contemporary Dance Festival, the Nederlands Dans Theater Summer Intensive, and the Arts Umbrella Summer Dance Intensive. Madison has performed the works of Martha Graham, Crystal Pite, and Paul Taylor and new choreographic creations by Ohad Naharin, Desmond Richardson, Andrea Miller, and Darrel Moultrie. She was chosen to present her work in Juilliard's 2019 ChoreoComp program and later, worked as Rena Butler's choreographic assistant for the Juilliard New Dances: Edition 2021 production. She has been a featured dancer in various marketing campaigns for Apolla Performance and was a dancer in the 2021 Warner Brothers film, "In the Heights".
From 2022-2023, Madison worked as a company dancer and teaching artist with GroundWorks DanceTheater where she performed new creations by choreographers such as Antonio Brown, Peter Chu, Rena Butler, David Shimotakahara, Spenser Theberge, and Sidra Bell. Last December, Madison staged and rehearsed Rena Butler's "This, That, and the Third" on the students of George Mason University and recently worked as her choreographic assistant for a new creation for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Madison recently joined Peter Chu's company, chuthis., and performed in June, at Orsolina28.
She is looking forward to creating and performing with Tampa City Ballet this season.

Yoni Delgado
BEGINNER CONTEMPORARY
Jhony Delgado trained at the youth children's company Paso a Paso in Cuba. In 2023, Delgado joined Tampa City Ballet as a dancer and as an instructor of Contemporary technique. He also had the opportunity to work as an Assistant Choreographer in the University of South Florida‘s Spring Performance 2024.

Marta Ortega
KIDS BALLET
Marta began her ballet studies at the Elementary Ballet School "Alejo Carpentier" and later at the National Ballet School. In 2005 she made a change of profile towards the specialty of Modern, Contemporary and Folk Dance, graduating in 2008.

As part of the group she worked with renowned choreographers of the world scene: Mats Ek, Rafael Bonachela, lan Linkens, Juan Kruz, Itzik Galili, Julio César Iglesias, George Céspedes, Pedro Ruiz, Carlos Acosta, Annabelle López Ochoa, Billy Cowie and Ángels Margarit, among others.
Ortega graduated from the University of the Arts of Cuba, specializing in Contemporary Dance. She was part of the founding group of the Acosta Danza company (2015), directed by the prestigious Carlos Acosta, with whom she performed on remarkable world stages.
In 2022 she co-starred with dancer Brian González in the musical produced in Cuba under the direction of Ivan Belaustegui "Alma, The Musical."
Along with Brian Gonzalez, she is currently developing training in Cuba to prepare students who study specialized dance careers, a project that combines classical ballet and contemporary dance techniques (floorwork) with the aim of forming a more complete and versatile dancer. They bring their personal and professional experiences as artists to roles that have demanded them to master different dance techniques.

Maria Fernanda Papa started her ballet training at the age of seven at Vladimir Issaev School of Classical Ballet in Miami where she received training from Vladimir Issaev, Lisa Maltzeva, Luana Hidalgo, and Giselle Deya.

Carissa Smith
MOMMY AND ME
Carissa Smith began her training in 2009 at Americas' Ballet School. She grew up with an established education of classical ballet and eventually was also taught in contemporary and modern dance at ABS. Carissa became a full time dancer with Tampa City Ballet.

She took part in a multitude of classical and neo-classical productions and danced in the ABS' modern ensemble. Within 2022 she joined Tampa City Ballet as a Trainee, where she took part in various productions ranging from performing the Dying Swan in Candlelight to starring as Alice in Alice in Wonderland to experimenting in numerous contemporary works. In the summers of 2022-24 she danced with Dutch National Ballet Academy, Scapino Ballet in the Netherlands and P.A.R.T.S in Belgium and gained a worldly view on dance.
In the 23/24 season Carissa became a full time dancer with Tampa City Ballet as well as teacher at Tampa City Ballet School and Ovations Dance Academy.
